Informational meeting Nov. 29 on planned Orion/Stoney Creek/Conklin roundabout

LAKE ORION — The Road Commission for Oakland County (RCOC), in partnership with Orion Township, is hosting a public information meeting on Nov. 29 to discuss the planned 2023 construction of a roundabout at the Orion Road/Stoney Creek Road/Conklin Road intersection.

The meeting will be from 4:30 – 7 p.m. at Blanche Sims Elementary School, 465 East Jackson St. in Lake Orion.

There will be no formal presentations at the meeting but road commission staff will be available to answer questions throughout.

The approximately $1.6 million project is funded mostly by federal dollars with the road commission and Orion Township providing matching dollars.

The project includes:

Construction of a modern roundabout at the Orion Road/Stoney Creek Road intersection. Conklin Road will be a “T” intersection with Orion Road north of the roundabout.

Reconstruction of 0.2 miles of road with asphalt.

Improvements to storm sewers and drainage.

Construction of Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA)-compliant pedestrian crosswalks with pathway connections.

Placement of new curbs and gutters.

Installation of intersection lighting.

Construction is expected to start in the summer of 2023, with the intersection closing to traffic. Access to homes and businesses within the construction zone will be maintained during the work.  The project is expected to conclude in the late fall of 2023.

The detour route for through traffic will be Adams Road to Silver Bell Road to Lapeer Road (M-24) to Flint Street to Miller Road to Conklin Road, and back to Orion Road and vice versa.

For more information on the project, visit the Orion/Stoney Creek/Conklin Roundabout page in the “Road Projects” section at www.rcocweb.org. — M.K.

One response to “Informational meeting Nov. 29 on planned Orion/Stoney Creek/Conklin roundabout”

  1. People using the road make mistakes (like speeding, running stop signs and red lights, turning left in front of oncoming traffic), always have and always will. Crashes will always be with us, but they need not result in fatalities or serious injury.

Modern roundabouts are the safest form of intersection in the world – the intersection type with the lowest risk of fatal or serious injury crashes – (much more so than comparable signals). Modern roundabouts require a change in speed and alter the geometry of one of the most dangerous parts of the system – intersections. The reduction in speed to about 20 mph and sideswipe geometry mean that, when a crash does happen at a modern roundabout, you might need a tow truck, but rarely an ambulance. Visit the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety or FHWA for modern roundabout FAQs and safety facts.
