The Lake Orion High School varsity wrestling team finished fourth in the Oakland County Tournament, held Dec. 17-18 at Clarkston High School, their highest finish in that tournament since 1998.
The Dragons finished with 175.5 points.
Clarkston won the tournament with 262 points.
Eight Lake Orion wrestlers placed in the meet, a team high since 10 placed in 1990.
Placing for the Dragons were: Freshman A.J. Pratt at 119, sixth place; freshman Jake Varilek at 125, fifth place; senior Jason Bothwell at 130, third place; junior Ian Rocheleau at 140, sixth place; and senior Gerry Webber at 152 in seventh place.
Also placing were: Junior Scott Avery at 189, sixth place; junior Shane Tobin at 215, seventh place; and senior Darren Peshl at 275, seventh place.
Varilek had a decision over Jeff Hoven of Birmingham Groves, 8-2.
Bothwell pinned Blake Fankell of Groves in 2:40.
Orion’s Andrew Crawford had the fifth spot, with a decision over Dave Johnson of Milford, 8-2.
Rocheleau had a decision over Randy Daugherty of Southfield, 9-3.
Avery had a decision over Drew Morrell of Rochester, 4-3.
The Dragons are off for the holiday break, and travel to Rochester High School on Jan. 5 for a quad-meet.
They will be in Brighton on Jan. 6, and return to LOHS on Jan. 11 for a meet against Notre Dame Prep, and for the LOHS Wrestling Reunion.
