The dark clouds clouded in around Rochester High School where the Wolves were battling for an OAA Red win.
The clouds threatened rain but Clarkston kept going at the top of the third inning with two hits from sophomore Ryan Rea and junior Ryan Slaughter to put them on bases.
Freshman DJ Zezula went up to bat next and brought in the two runners on his hit. Senior Alex Barta followed with his hit to bring in Zezula and sophomore Sean Martens, putting the score 7-0.
The Wolves struck again at the top of the fourth inning as the rain started to pour on the Falcons? field. Slaughter hit a triple to bring in Rea and Zezula, who also had an RBI during the inning.
By the time Clarkston finished their defense plays against the Falcons to finish the fourth inning the rain was fiercely coming down and the game was stopped, 9-1.
The game will continue on Thursday at Rochester, 4:30 p.m.
The Wolves beat Lahser on Tuesday in eight innings, 6-3. Slaughter was the winning pitcher.
“He struggled in the first inning,” said Phil Price, head coach. “He gave up three runs early then dominated the rest of the game. He didn’t give up anymore.”
He added the difference came from the way Slaughter was approaching the game from the mound.
“He started pitching being a pitcher instead of just throwing,” Price said. “He got a little competitive. It was a big boost for us.”
Boosts also came from hitters junior Nick Mazzone, senior Jake Forsten and senior Dylan Peck.
“It was really uplifting,” said Price. “Nick set the tempo and did a great job on base and stealing. Forsten batted second and he had some big hits and Peck added big support.”
The Wolves opened this week against Lake Orion on Monday. They lost, 14-1. Martens brought in the lone run off his hit.
“They are pretty good,” said Price before heading into the game. “They have some very good pitchers and we are looking forward to some competition and see what happens.”
The boys host Rochester Adams on Friday in a double header. It is the second match up between the two teams after Clarkston beat them earlier in the season, 9-7. The Wolves were two points behind in the seventh inning and scored four runs to win.
“I am sure they are going to be coming out with a little more fire in them,” Price said. “They are well-coached and a good team.”
He added strengths going into this week will come from defense.
“Our kids are very prepared,” he said. ‘When our pitchers are hitting their location it is helpful and when we are playing good defense. Hopefully we get better and better as the year goes.”
The games begin at 4 and 6 p.m.
