With a five-set victory over Groves at home on Feb. 13, Clarkston’s volleyball team has finally caught some good vibrations with districts creeping over the horizon.
‘I was happy with the way we played. (The victory) gives us a little steam for districts,? Clarkston Coach Kelly Avenall said.
The Wolves won the first two sets of the match 25-21 and 25-19 but then watched a 23-15 lead evaporate in the third set, which they lost 26-24. After losing the fourth set 25-23, the Wovles persevered to win the match clinching set 15-6.
Lindsey Sawyer stood out individually for Clarkston with 10 blocks, while Laura Kupe carved up Groves for 15 kills.
The victory brought the Wolves OAA I record to 2-8 and Avenall hopes to add to the win column prior to districts on March 3.
‘I’d like to pick up a victory at against Lahser and then have a good showing at (the Andover tourney),? Avenall said.
The Wolves league season draws to a close at Lahser on Feb. 16, but many of the teams from the OAA I will be present at the Andover tournament on Feb. 25.
Looking past the end of the regular season, Avenall likes where her team is headed.
‘I like the draw we have for districts. I think it gives us a good chance to make the finals,? Avenall said.
Clarkston plays district host Stoney Creek on March 3 at 7:00 p.m. The victor of that match advances to play Eisenhower in the semifinals on March 4 at noon. On the other side of the bracket Romeo, which Avenall considers the toughest team in the district, faces Rochester Adams on March 3 at 5 p.m. The winner of that match plays Lake Orion on March 4 at 10 a.m. The district finals are slated for 2:30 p.m. on March 4.
