Marie Timm, a senior at Clarkston High School, was recently nominated for a scholarship through the Daughters of the American Revolution Good Citizens Program. One student can be selected as the DAR Good Citizen each year.
Timm’s nomination is sponsored by the Sashabaw Plains Chapter of DAR.
Nominees are selected for their strengths in four areas: dependability, leadership, service and patriotism. In addition to submitting grade transcripts and letters of recommendation, students are required to complete an application essay in one sitting while under supervision
Timm’s essay topic was ‘Why it is important to preserve our American heritage.?
‘It is important because America is fighting for freedom for other countries all over the world and for ours. It’s also the country of pioneers and freedom of thought,? said Timm, adding that Americans invented the light bulb, discovered electricity and built places like Disney World.
Timm is hoping to attend West Point or another military academy after graduation. She said she discovered a year ago that her life already runs like a military school.
‘I get up in the morning to go work out, get my homework done, do whatever I need to do,? Timm said. ‘I play sports and the military requires a time to play extra curricular activities… it just fits my life-style.
‘I need to be challenged in order to succeed,? Tinn added.
Timm said she wants to be a doctor, and would like to work in a Mobile Army Surgical Hospital setting if possible.
Over the years, Timm has been involved with cross country, soccer and volleyball.
Timm also said she participates in mission trips to Tennessee every summer through St. Daniel Catholic Church.
Timm, 17, is the daughter of Mike and Barbara Timm of Independence Township. She has three siblings ? John, 15; Breanne, 13; and Mark, 10.
