Time to shape up

Did you know that your stomach is only about the size of your fist and that we are only suppose to eat a fist size portion of food at our meals?
Last Saturday my parents and I went out to eat with my grandparents at ‘The Old Country Buffet.? A place that I have always loved going as far back as I can remember.
However, this time I didn’t seem to enjoy myself as much as I did when I was a kid. To be honest I felt like crying.
I was saddened by rudeness of people who would cut in front of other people or race to get the last piece of chicken because they couldn’t wait one minute for someone to bring out a new batch. And as I looked at those around me I realized, the majority of the people there were overweight and yes I will even say ‘obese.?
Now I understand that some people have physical illnesses that have caused weight gain or slowed down their ability to lose weight. However, I would venture to say that most people are overweight or unhealthy by choice because they haven’t learned the discipline of proper eating habits or the proper amount of food intake for their body size.
I don’t remember the statistic of childhood obesity in America, but it made my mouth drop when I heard it. I think television shows like ‘Shaq’s Big Challenge,? ‘The Biggest Loser,? and the movie ‘Super Size Me? are telling us that it’s time to shape up. It’s time to take care of our bodies.
Now many people may look at me and say that, ‘Well it’s easy for you to say because you’re skinny.? Just because I am skinny, that doesn’t save me from the risk of a heart attack, high cholesterol, diabetes, or some other form of malnutrition. I still need to eat smart and exercise.
I will admit I need to change some of my own eating habits, I have often wondered what my sugar and cholesterol levels are.
Parents, it’s time to limit your kids? video game time and make them go outside to do something physically active. Don’t forget kids also learn by example.
Stop buying greasy fast food everyday, go for a healthier choice like Subway or ordering a dinner salad.
Becoming disciplined in one area can help us become disciplined in many areas. The choice is up to you.
Until next time, God bless!
