The Annual Oxford and Lake Orion Student Exhibit opened last night at the Lake Orion Art Center highlighting local elementary, middle and high school artists.
Four students from the Oxford School District are showcased at the center at 115 S. Anderson St. in downtown Lake Orion.
Oxford Middle School art teacher, Linda Robinson, chose eighth grader Erika Kamm’s self-portrait and Rachel Dover’s terracotta clay vessel to display.
Kamm said it took her about a month to complete her pink-infused self-portrait.
To create the portrait, she said Robinson took black and white photographs of all her students. After being printed to the appropriate size, a clear piece of paper was used to trace the shadow balance.
Each grade of shadow was given a number and a specific color to coordinate, in Kamm’s portrait varying degrees of pink were used.
This being Kamm’s first year in art, she was surprised when she found out her art was chosen for the exhibit.
‘I’m really excited,? she said. ‘I wasn’t expecting it.?
Her mother, Patty, said she and Kamm’s father think the portrait is ‘beautiful.?
‘When she brought it home I was like, ‘can I keep it?? she said proudly.
Kamm said she definitely plans on taking more art classes when she attends high school.
Other Oxford students making their debut at the exhibit are second grader Kristen Evans from Leonard Elementary, who created a paper mache bowl and fifth grader Allison Hart from Lakeville Elementary who made a colorful plaster mask.
The students? artwork will be on display until February 17 and can be seen Tuesday’Friday from 10 a.m.?5 p.m. or Wednesday nights from 6?8 p.m.
