Students ‘build bridges? with music

Nine senior citizens from the Village of Oakland Woods in Pontiac made a trip to Oxford Middle School last Wednesday for a special concert on their behalf.
The afterschool groups Sound Wave Drummers, Drum Fire Drummers and the Thunder Drummers, as well as the Wildcat Singers, performed various songs with their marimbas, drums and vocals, and were led by music director Jan Flynn.
‘I tell the kids that we’re building bridges with our music,? Flynn said.
Maggie Barclay, activities coordinator at the senior living community, said the seniors frequently participate in drumming aerobic exercises with her.
‘It’s really about their mind, body and spirit connecting,? she said, noting that the concert is a great inter-generational activity.
After the concert, the students had lunch with the seniors and shared special handmade gifts they brought for them to make their visitors feel welcome.
