Sign-up open for Angel’s race

Planning is well underway for this year’s Angel’s Place Race, Saturday, May 19.
The annual event includes a 1 Mile Family Fun Walk, starting at 9 a.m.; and 5K Bruce Clifton Run /Walk and 10K Run, 9:30 a.m., all starting and ending at St. Daniel Church, 7010 Valley Park Drive in Clarkston.
“Meetings start right after the run on how to improve it. We took suggestions from runners on how to improve the 10K route,” said Paul Maxwell of Independence Township, race director.
About 60 community volunteers will help on the day of the race.
“It’s a very worthwhile cause,” said Jim Lenhardt, volunteer. “Angels? Place provides a personal touch to people with disabilities.”
“I believe whole heartedly what Angels? Place does, the services it provides,” said Dave Cushing, volunteer.
The 5K race is dedicated to Bruce Clifton, longtime volunteer who passed away last year.
“He designed the 5K route,” Maxwell said.
“We’ve had tremendous support of the community in sponsorships, runners and walkers, and volunteers. We had beautiful weather last year. I encourage everyone to come out and support us again.”
Angels? Place is a non-profit organization providing homes and professional support for persons with developmental disabilities. Residential services include 14 group homes in the tri-county area. Ideas for the future include a new one in the Clarkston area.
“We’re looking into it,” Maxwell said. “Through Angels? Place’s services, I have seen many lives changed for the better.”
Services for families of adults and children with developmental disabilities still living at home include respite, social and recreational opportunities, vocational assistance and an artisan’s cooperative.
