Public hearing set on 2008 township budget

Brandon Twp.- The township board will take public input and approve a budget for 2008 during a special meeting at 6 p.m., Dec. 11, at the township offices, 395 Mill St.
‘It’s a lean budget, very little fat,? said Township Supervisor Ron Lapp. ‘We are anticipating revenues slightly less than $2,378,945 and expenditures the same as revenues.?
The proposed budget allows for the purchase of a new accounting program and a new mainframe server. The budget also features a 2.5 percent pay raise for all township employees and a 10 percent one-time pay raise for Recreation Director Fred Waybrant, who will also receive the standard 2.5 percent raise.
Lapp explains that the decision to give Waybrant the raise was unanimously agreed on by the board because of a change in the recreation director’s responsibilities. Waybrant will also be in charge of the Brandon Township Community Park, set to open at Oakwood and Hadley roads next May. The raise will bring Waybrant’s annual salary to $49,550.
‘We felt it was warranted,? Lapp said. ‘It’s still a bit lower than surrounding communities, but it keeps him in the game.?
Lapp said he is sure there will be criticism regarding the pay raises, but noted the township employees work hard and did not get a raise last year.
‘I suspect critics will say we should work for nothing,? he said. ‘I don’t agree. The cost of living has risen faster than the pay scale.?
