The Orion Art Center held their annual Anything Goes art contest and exhibit last week.

Nineteen artists submitted up to three pieces of original artwork using any medium. This year’s art ranged from photography to wood and resin and also featured paper quilling for the first time, said Orion Art Center Director Karin Starick.

“This is my favorite show and I think actually it’s our most popular show because it’s anything goes. So, I think we get a lot more artists who are able to submit in this show because there’s such a wide variety of things that people can submit.”

The 55 submissions were judged by Reggie Harrison, Orion Art Center Director from 2001-2011.

This year’s third place winner was Dorothy Sedlock with her collection of pieces Elephant Walk, made from acrylic paints; Begonias, made of watercolor and Chain Letter using recycled materials.

Betsy Marsh took home second place with her oil painting Solitary Bliss.

And first place went to Jerry Brazeau for his acrylic Cubism Still Life.

Honorable mentions went to Melissa Parks’ collection and Lorene Porter’s collection.

Parks’ collection consisted of her mosaic I See Red, Retro Principles and Round and Round both made of wood and resin; and Porter’s collection of Deer, Giraffe and Rabbit all made of polymer clay, acrylic, doll parts, fabric and embellishments.

“I thought it was a great show. I love to see the new artists and artists that have been involved for a long time. There’s so much talent in this artistic community and I loved how diverse it was,” said Harrison. It’s never easy to judge because somehow you have to eliminate. And another judge, a juror, taught me that you have to eliminate possibly by a scratch on the mat or a side that isn’t finished or maybe it’s not framed, you have to find ways to wiggle your way up to the top person. So it was hard to judge because there was a lot of really wonderful work in there.”

The Anything Goes art exhibit can be viewed at the Orion Art Center until Aug. 15.
