The varsity, junior varsity and freshman football teams from Clarkston High School volunteered their time to make Lighthouse Emergency Service’s Rush for Food a sweeping success on Aug. 19.
‘We had a little more publicity and we really encouraged the kids to collect as much as they could,? said Mary Anne Kenerson, Rush for Food committee member.
This year’s Rush for Food took in 3,321 pounds of food. Last year’s Rush garnered 2,200 pounds of food.
‘The kids went into the (food collection room) when they were done and they were pretty amazed because it started out completely empty,? said Kenerson.
The Rush for Food’s success is partially is equal parts tradition and organization. The varsity players handled the driving and along with the JV, collected food in 19 different Clarkston area neighborhoods. Back at Lighthouse, the freshmen team sorted and weighed the haul.
