Students at Carpenter Elementary School were able to travel to Africa without even leaving their classrooms during the school’s intersession on Oct. 11-15.
Carpenter, a year-round school, used the intersession theme ‘Adventures on African Safari,? to teach the children about the animals and cultures of Africa.
Students saw an exhibit of live animals of Africa with the Living Science Foundation, and traveled to the Detroit Zoo for a close-up look at some of the larger animals that couldn’t visit their classroom.
The African Drum and Dance Troupe, under the direction of Kevin Collins, visited the school, and students learned about and got the chance to play some unique West African drums. The troupe’s dancers presented an African cultural performance.
The children wrapped up their week on Africa with their own unique African parade, wearing African cultural accessories such as masks, Kente clothes and beads they made throughout the week.
