Officer rescues ‘little duckie? from storm sewer

You may have seen them waddling around town before.
The Mallard family — Mama Duck, Papa Duck and babies — often are taking a dip in the waters of the Mill Pond or happily strutting their stuff from here to there in downtown Clarkston.
But, Saturday, May 31 one of the flock found itself in peril.
It seems while walking along Washington by the Mill Pond, one of the babies fell into a storm sewer, Clarkston Police Chief Ernest Combs said.
‘But a citizen saw it and called the police department,? he said.
Officer Wesley Suttles responded.
‘The babies were crying and the mama was quacking like, ‘Get my baby back,? She wasn’t leaving the scene,? Suttles recalled.
He went to the Department of Public Works to get a hook to remove the drain cover. Then, once removed, he found the little duck, about three feet down, swimming around and was able to save it.
‘I reached down the drain and just picked it up, and lost my good pen in the mean time. But it was worth it because I’m an animal lover. Mom and the ducklings are all happy now.?
‘The duckie and his siblings were reunited,? Combs said. The police chief said other larger departments probably would not have wasted their time with a call of this sort. He said, Suttles ‘went above and beyond the call of duty.?
The Clarkston Police Department is all about service, Combs said. ‘We do more than write tickets.?
