Jillyan Scarborough admits that her recent undertaking is ‘crazy.? But the cause her adventure benefits certainly doesn’t fit that same description.
Scarborough, an Oakview Middle School teacher, is in the midst of training for a marathon.
She has a little bit of prior experience in running the 26.2 miles. In 2004 she took part in the Detroit Marathon.
This time around, she hopes to run in the San Diego Rock ‘n? Roll Marathon on June 4th, but she needs some help in order to attend the event.
In order to participate, Scarborough must raise at least $3,800 for the American Stroke Association and American Heart Association.
‘When I received a flyer in the mail to run for the American Stroke/Heart Association it really hit a chord,? she said. ‘I recently had a close friend suffer a stroke and my family is plagued with heart problems.
‘I thought, what a great way to raise money and to motivate myself to reach a goal,? she added.
Scarborough is already running about 40 miles a week in preparation for San Diego.
She has registered as part of the Detroit team in the Train to End Stroke marathon program that does fundraising for the ASA and AHA.
She has already started her campaign to raise the $3,800, but will need significant help to reach the goal by the March 15 deadline.
If she does not raise the amount needed in time to attend the event, Scarborough said she will run a full marathon here in Detroit.
Those interested in offering their support to Scarborough can send a check (made out to the American Stroke Association) to her at Oakview Middle School located at 917 Lake George, Oakland, MI 48363.
She also has a website that will accept online donations and messages of support at http://teamdetroit.kintera.org/sandiego/jillscarborough.
