Abby Haelewyn of Stoney Creek kicked in a goal less than six minutes into their game Friday against Clarkston.
It was enough.
‘We faced a good team and we competed with them and I am really proud of them for that,? said Clarkston coach Sarah Wasilk. ‘They were much more disciplined, controlled and aggressive – they weren’t afraid to come out and play this team.?
Girls Varsity soccer lost to Stoney Creek, 1-0.
Haelewyn scored the goal into the corner of the net, with an assist from Rachel Rinaldi.
Goalie Demaree Wells and the rest of the defense worked hard to keep Stoney Creek to one goal, Wasilk said.
‘I am really proud of the girls and how they played,? she said.
‘I thought they played one of the best games I have seen them play. I have been with these girls for awhile and I am really proud of them. Even though we lost, they played really well and really hard.?
‘I am really happy we got a win. I felt like we could have done better offensively,? said Stoney Creek coach Erin Rodger.
Clarkston made eight shots on Stoney Creek’s goal. Wells made six saves for the game.
The night before, the team lost to Royal Oak, 2-0.
‘They played a good game,? said Wasilk. ‘We just had to fix a few things here and there but we talked about it after the game and made some changes.?
The girls play a busy schedule this week.
They played Groves on Tuesday. Going into the game, Wasilk and the team were ready.
‘They are a good team,? said Wasilk. ‘All teams in division one and division two are good teams. It can go either way.?
