Many students spend their school’s spring break by heading south for a dose of sunshine and relaxation. Ten Lake Orion High School students passed up the sun and fun recently to spend their spring break (April 12-15) working with the Greater Jackson Michigan Habitat for Humanity and YMCA Storer Camps in Napoleon, Michigan.
The mission of Habitat for Humanity is to eliminate poverty housing, revive impoverished neighborhoods and provide safe, affordable homes for low-income families.
The students removed tree stumps, tore out sidewalks, landscaped, painted and contributed to the Downtown Jackson Beautification Project. Besides working on job sites, students collected over $1,300 in donations for Habitat for Humanity. The students received 32 service learning hours towards their LOHS service learning requirement.
Students attending the trip were: Drew Collette, Sally Her, Cameron Kester, Ben Knight, Sarah Lawless, Andy Miller, Lisa Mosely, Emily Roesch, Jennifer Toth and Jasper White.
The trip was arranged and chaperoned by Lake Orion Schools Guided Activities Program (GAP) coordinator Ben Gerdeman, LOHS English teacher Brian Bishop, and Port Huron Middle School teacher Katie Kelly.
This was the third year that LOHS students participated in a Habitat for Humanity project.
