Let the battle begin!

Lake Orion fifth graders filled the CERC gym on Saturday for the annual Battle of the Books. Over 60 teams participated in the contest.
‘They do all of this just for the challenge and the love of reading,? said Orion Township Public Library Children’s Librarian Claire Poynter. ? The prizes are minimal, and they don’t do it as part of their school work.?
She added that Battle of the Books is the library’s staff favorite major program of the year, and they are always amazed and impressed by the kids that participate, as well as their parents.
‘One of the most valuable things to come out of this program every year is the time that the fifth graders are spending reading and discussing books with their moms and dads,? Poynter said.
Top honors went to LRW (Librarians Rock the World) who garnered 94 points. The team consists of Sofia Pokrzywa, Emma Hasselbach, Danielle Dykema and Lydia Jacobsen.
Behind them were Coffee Kids (Anthony Mandalari, Tyler Dick, Philip Meyer, Katelyn Llewellyn and Mackenzie Koehn) with 92 points; Reading Riders (Samantha Hann, Ellen Radcliff, Katy Wurm, Maddie Miller and Becca Draper) with 90 points; Perky Penguins (Jenna Losensky, Molly Moreman, Katie Tyrrell and Margaret Trudeau) with 89 points; and Creative Characters (Melanie Ebeling, Sara Olds, Nicole Gassman and Rachel Cullon) will 88 points.
Several others teams were also recognized for the best team name, the best team attire and the best sportsmanship.
