Lake Orion boys cross country team runs away with OAA Red Jamboree 3 title, looks to regional races on Friday

The Lake Orion boys varsity cross country team continues to dominate at meets, this time winning the OAA Red Jamboree 3 at Clintonwood Park in Clarkston on Thursday.

The Dragons also took four of the top five spots in the race and six of the top 10.

Lake Orion senior Clayton Kuiper (16:10.2) finished the 5k race second overall, less than three seconds behind Clarkston’s Joey Taverna (16:07.8).

Dragon seniors Hong Bing Tang (16:17.5) finished third, Will Houvener (16:20.7) was fourth and Adam Hafeli (16:31.7) was fifth.

Lake Orion junior Luke Peardon (16:42.9) finished seventh overall, and senior Jacob Gleason (16:53.1) was ninth. Senior Ronnie Leonard (19th) and junior Nathan Yee (21st) also had strong races for the Dragons.

Lake Orion finished with a score of 21, followed by Clarkston with 59 and Troy and Oxford with 86. Rochester Adams, 128, and Birmingham Seaholm, 160, finished at the bottom of the six-team field.

This is the Dragon’s sixth title this season.

The team won the Anchor Bay Early Bird invite on Sept. 2, the Averill Invitational on Sept. 11, the OAA Red Jamboree 1 on Sept. 14, the 53rd Holly/Duane Raffin Festival of Races on Sept. 18, the Oakland County Cross Country High School Championship on Oct. 9 and the Oxford Invite on Oct. 15.

The Dragons finished second to Brighton at the Mott Fall Classic on Sept. 25 and second to Oxford at the OAA Red Jamboree 2 on Sept. 28 and have not finished lower than second place this season.

Lake Orion will next compete on Friday in the Michigan High School Athletic Association Lower Peninsula Region 9-1 meet at Anchor Bay High School.

Lake Orion girls cross country

The Lake Orion girls cross country team finished in sixth place at the bottom of the Jamboree.

Oxford won the Jamboree with a score of 37, followed by Troy, 62, Clarkston, 79, Birmingham Seaholm, 88 and Rochester Adams, 117. Lake Orion finished with 125 points.

Freshman Addison Verlinden was the Dragon’s top runner, finishing in ninth place with a time of 19:52.7. Sophomore Lauren Dumeah (20:45) was 24th, senior Alexandra Boes (20:48.6) was 25th, sophomore Maddie Feurig (21:17.3) was 30th and senior Kendall Osborne (21:50.4) was 39th.

The Dragons compete at Anchor Bay on Friday.
