Winter break can let skills on the links get rusty, but PGA pro Marc L. White can help.
?’You can learn a lot indoors,? said White, PGA supervisor of instruction at Oakhurst Golf and Country Club who set up shop for the winter at 7151 N. Main Street.
The main studio includes full-swing, chipping, and putting stations, with extra rooms set up for club repair, chipping, and fitness ? White is a Titleist Performance Institute certified golf fitness instructor.
‘Bob Roth showed me three spaces in this building,? White said. ‘This one is perfect. If I could design my own indoor training studio, I don’t know if I could do better.?
Nets permit full power swings, and computers, Golf Achiever software, video cameras, and monitors provide a virtual golf simulation.
‘It’s a tremendous learning tool,? he said. ‘You can see your swing from different angles. It connects what you feel with what’s correct.?
White has lived in Clarkston since 1998, and has been with the PGA since 1987.
He started playing golf when he was 11 years old.
‘I’ve always been around golf,? he said.
He earned a degree in biology at Central Michigan University in 1981. He wanted to work for the DNR, but hiring was slow at the time. Working his way through college at UPS, he was considering a promotion offer when he had an epiphany.
‘I was thinking about what I like, what I’m good at, and it came back to golf,? he said.
He enrolled in Ferris State’s professional golf management program, and took a job at Mt. Pleasant Country Club as an assistant golf professional. That led to the PGA of America’s apprentice program and a career as a golf professional.
‘I never did go to Ferris,? he said.
He will work at the N. Main Street location through the winter.
‘On May 1 or when the weather breaks, I’ll go back to Oakhurst,? he said.
He has been supervisor of instruction at Oakhurst for 12 years.
