The coach that helped bring three state titles to Goodrich will not be coaching the Martians? track team this spring.
At the Feb. 28 meeting of the Goodrich Board of Education, John Shaw’s name was not among the list of coaches approved by the board for the spring 2005 sports season.
Under Shaw’s guidance, the Goodrich girls cross country team won two straight Division 3 state championships in 2003-04, and the girls track team won the Division 3 state championship in 2004.
Shaw was named the Division 3 girls cross country coach of the year in 2003. A longtime runner, Shaw won an individual state championship and became a state record holder in the 1960’s.
Goodrich Schools Superintendent Kim Hart declined to reveal specifics as to why Shaw will not be coming back this season.
‘Basically it’s a no-comment situation out of respect for those involved and their privacy,? she said. ‘It’s a personnel matter that was handled to our satisfaction in January.?
In the Goodrich district, coaches are required to reapply and cannot serve another season without approval by the board of education.
Coaching positions approved by the board at its Feb. 28 meeting include Brad Rainwater and Jenny Sweet as head varsity track coaches, as well as Tim Cornwell and Sarah Kaechele as assistant track coaches.
