The Varsity Wildcats found that out the hard when they took to the ice against undefeated Berkley on Wednesday, Dec. 30.
After three periods of hockey, the crowd went home disappointed after seeing the Bears end the Wildcats five-game winning streak by a 3-1 score.
The Wildcats outshot the Bears 31-28, but it was one of those nights where the puck just couldn’t find the back of the net.
‘We had several opportunities, but just couldn’t beat their goalie,? said Hockey Coach David Hague. ‘You have to give him credit, he was outstanding.?
The Wildcats got off to a shaky start and gave up two goals within a 1:19 of each other in the first period. Hague made some line adjustments, which settled the Wildcats down enough to see them trail 2-0 heading into the locker room after the first period.
The second period began much better for the Wildcats, who got a quick goal from Nick Hocker 43 seconds into the period. Hocker was assisted by Will Buday and Nolan Chapman.
However, the deficit would increase midway through the period after Dean Couwlier was called for hooking. Berkley scored on the ensuing power play, sealing the victory.
‘It was one of those games that could have went either way,? said Hague. ‘Berkley played well and were able to get the win.?
The loss drops the Wildcats to 8-2, which is good for a half game lead over Fenton in the overall standings. Fenton is 7-1-1.
The Wildcats travel to the Lincoln Park Community Center to battle with Lincoln Park on Jan. 7 before their first place showdown in the Flint Metro League with Fenton on Jan. 9.
