The offensive outburst for the Varsity Hockey team continued this past week when they defeated Brandon 9-1 on Dec. 2.
Senior Goalie Corey Hrischuk stopped 22 of 23 shots from Brandon and senior Will Buday, sophomore Alex Kaks and sophomore Garrett Kovacic each had two goals for the Wildcats and Junior Matt Reid had one goal and two assists.
‘For us, it was a nice win,? said Head Coach Dave Hague. ‘We were better then the game before and that’s most important this time of year. Brandon is always a nice rivalry, and I was happy for the boys. They worked hard and earned the victory.?
Over the weekend, the team traveled to Illinois take part in a tournament. On Friday, Dec. 4, they lost 3-2 to Waubonsie Valley, one of the top hockey teams in Illinois. The game was close throughout, with both teams taking 29 shots each. However, Waubonsie scored the game winning goal with 31 seconds left.
‘We were a little sluggish early on, but took control of the game in the second and third periods,? said Hague.
Freshman Jimmy Wallington led the Wildcats with one goal and one assist.
Luckily, there was a short time between games. The Wildcats bounced back from Friday’s disappointing loss and scored often against Naperville in their 8-1 rout the following morning.
The Wildcats had 10 different players get on the score sheet, and Hague noted that the line of Buday, sophomore Nick Hocker and sophomore Nolan Chapman was outstanding.
‘This was probably our best game of the season. The boys stuck to the game plan for three full periods and all three of our forward lines were especially good,? said Hague.
The boys return to Flint Metro League play when battle Lapeer West on Dec. 9 and Lapeer East on Dec. 12.
