It took two overtimes to get the job done, but Goodrich’s varsity basketball team earned a hard-fought win against LakeVille.
Matt Christensen scored eight points in the two overtime periods and Zac Glynn added seven in overtime as the Martians defeated the Falcons 57-54 in Genesee Area Conference action Feb. 10 at Goodrich.
The Martians have won three straight games in a row, and are now 7-9 overall and 7-7 in the GAC Red Division.
Christensen hit a three-point shot with 33 seconds left in the second overtime period, and then converted two free throws with 9.7 seconds left to secure the win for the Martians.
Goodrich coach Gary Barns said the win was a ‘really big? confidence booster for the Martians.
‘They’d beaten us previously by a basket,? he said. ‘They’re a senior-laden ball club. It was good for us ? now we have to build on it.?
The Falcons had a 11-6 lead after the first quarter, but the Martians clawed their way back in the third quarter, as Eric Hughes and Jake McGinnis scored four points each to help lift the Martians within one point, 18-17, at halftime.
In the third quarter, the Martians? three-point shooting came to the forefront, as Hughes and Christensen each connected from downtown to help give Goodrich a 27-24 lead after three.

In the second overtime, Goodrich’s three-point shooting again made a difference, as Christensen hit two shots from long distance and Glynn added one three-pointer. The Goodrich duo’s production was enough to counteract LakeVille’s Ryan Streichert and T.J. Rini, who scored five points apiece in the second overtime.
Glynn led the Martians in scoring with 19 points, including two three-point shots and a 7-of-7 performance from the free throw stripe. He also had seven steals for the Martians.
