It was a best ever finish for the varsity girls golf team during Regionals on Thursday, Oct. 6.
Battling 11 other teams at Heather Highlands Golf Course in Holly, the Wildcats managed to shoot a 389, good enough for fifth place on the day. Birmingham Seaholm won the event with a 336. Bloomfield Hills-Marion finished second, while Fenton was third.
Sophomore Kyla Kurczewski led the Wildcats with a 91, followed by seniors Hannah Beebe (98) and Claire Wolanin (99). Junior Riley Hayes rounded out Oxford’s scoring with a 101.
By Kurczewski shooting a 91, she became only the second individual qualifier for the girls state finals in the history of Oxford’s girls golf program.
The Division two golf final will take place at Katke-Cousins Golf Course at Oakland University on Friday, Oct. 14 and Saturday, Oct. 15.
Varsity head coach Terry Kelley said the experience of the boys golf team playing their state finals at Katke-Cousins should help Kurczewski because he could help her mold her game to the golf course.
‘We had a practice round down there yesterday (Sunday) and went over a number of strategic issues and tried to fit her game to the course,? Kelley said.
‘It’s one thing to play well on your home course, but they understand they have to develop a game and take that game and adjust it to different courses they play,? he added. ‘She is just a steady player and that is what it takes to play tournament golf.?
Overall, Kelley said the 2011 season was ‘excellent.?
According to Kelley, the team finished with the most victories in a season (10), the most consecutive victories in a season (10), second in the Oakland Activities Association White Division and was fifth at regionals.
Overall, they were 10-1, 7-1 in the OAA White. They lost their last match of the season 196-191 to Bloomfield Hills Andover on Tuesday, Oct. 4.
‘I think the thing that pleased me the most about it was the effort the girls put in,? Kelley said. ‘They went into every match believing they could win and they worked hard at to do that. It was quite an achievement.?
‘They were well liked and well respected by all of the teams they played, and that is important,? Kelley added. ‘I think we had a very successful season.?
