GIRLS ? This year’s girls track team’s backbone will be supplied by the members of the Wolves State champion girls cross country team.
Clarkston Coach John Yorke feels that Liz Mengyan, Jenny Morgan, Gillian Nordquist, Anne Oltman, Lisa Sickman, Elle Kuhta, Lindsay Smith and Beth Hoekstra dominance in the distance events will go a long way for the Wolves. Four-year varsity member Stephanie Parkin’s deft hurdle heats will also help the Wolves as they reach for their goals of league and regional titles.
This is Yorke’s first year as head coach of the girls track team, having taken over from Jamie Labrosse, the girls cross country coach, who will concentrate on the distance runners this season.
‘We (Yorke and Labrosse) are just switching positions. His focus will be on the distance runners, while I will focus on different events,? said Yorke, who has been involved in the track program for 10 years at Clarkston.
Yorke feels that Pontiac Northern will be a tough opponent for the Wolves this year in the league and Grand Blanc is the team to watch in the region.
According to Yorke, the Wolves? competitors in the field events are young, but there is great potential there.
Clarkston won their first dual meet of the season 97-82 against Rochester Adams on April 7. Yorke was somewhat surprised that Adams did not give the Wolves more trouble.
Clarkston’s matchup with Southfield on April 12 finished too late for this edition of The Clarkston News. Next up for the Wolves is away meets at Troy on April 14 and Lake Orion on April 19.
