Entering the Flint Metro League Meet, three things had to fall into place for the Varsity Girls Cross Country team to claim a League Championship.
The girls, who finished at 7-2 in the league duals, needed to win, and they needed Holly, who finished first in the duals at 9-0, to come in third and Linden, who finished the duals at 8-1, to finish second.
Everything fell into place for the girls because at the end of the day, they were celebrating a Tri-Championship with Linden and Holly.
The Wildcats finished first in the meet with 65 points, followed by Linden in second with 75 points and Holly in third with 97 points.
With 50 percent of the league title being weighed by the dual results and the other 50 percent factored by the results in the league meet, the girls still had a chance to tie for the title.
Freshman Brooke Kovacic came in first overall with her time of 19:20. She was also the first Freshman in school history to be a league champion.
Junior Megan Seeley finished 10th with her time of 21:07 while Freshman Ashley Burr was 13th with a time of 21:11. Senior Kate Wolanin’s time of 21:32 placed her 20th and Sophomore Olivia Hernandez was 24th with her time of 21:41.
The Wildcats? girls team also had five runners named to the FML All-League team. Kovacic was first-team all honors, Seeley and Burr were second team, while Wolanin and Hernandez were honorable mentions.
The Varsity Boys also moved up in the FML Standings after their third place finish in the meet.
The Wildcats started the day in fifth place, but they swapped places with Holly after they finished fifth in the league meet.
Junior Dylan Smith finished seventh at 17:10. He also made first team all-league. Freshman Ryan Gillespie, who was named to the second team all-league, was 11th with a time of 17:33.
Junior Curtis Kocher was 15th with a time of 17:47, Senior Alex Pollack was 17th with a 17:52 and Sophomore Alec Smith was 19th with a 17:56. They were honorable mentions for the all-league team.
Linden won the meet with 43 points, followed by Fenton’s 56 points and the Wildcats 69 points. Linden also won the overall League title, followed by Fenton, Swartz Creek and Oxford.
‘We did well, we beat two teams that we haven’t beaten before this year,? said Head Coach Ray Sutherland.
The Wildcats look to continue their strong running as they compete in Regionals this weekend at Delta College.
