Oxford residents itching to bust out their fishing rods and tackle can do so this weekend and head out to Stony Lake Township Park for a fishing tournament.
On Saturday, July 23 from 10 a.m. until 2 p.m., the local non-profit organization Touched by an Angel will be hosting their first annual fishing tournament to raise money for Thanksgiving food baskets to be handed out in Oxford.
‘All ages are welcomed to come,? said Curtis Jack , the owner and president of Touched by an Angel. ‘Anyone over the age of 17 must have a valid fishing license…if you are 16 or under you can be accompanied by an adult.?
Registration begins at 9 a.m. The cost is $10, which includes lunch and night crawlers.
According to Jack, fishing ends at 2 p.m. and fish must be brought to the judging table no later than 2:15 p.m.
The winner of the tournament will win a $50 Bass Pro Shops gift card.
Handing out Thanksgiving baskets is nothing new for Jack, who used to live in Pontiac before moving to Oxford a year-and-a-half ago.
Over the course of the last nine years, Jack has handed out more than 1200 baskets to residents in Pontiac and throughout Oakland County.
‘We actually run out of a household right now because we are so new, but once we get going good we will start spreading out,? Jack said.
Jack handed out 40 Easter Baskets to youth in Oxford already this year.
‘I do a lot for this (community) and I plan on doing something for Christmas,? he added.
This is the first time Jack has ever done a fishing tournament. ‘I’m looking forward to it,? he said.
Currently the tournament has six participants.
Jack is looking for at least 20 participants.
‘I can’t emphasize enough how many people we need,? he said. ‘I’m hoping we get a lot of participants in this events.
If anyone would like to preregister, give Jack a call at (248) 460-6075.
He noted the first eight people who pre-register after reading this article will receive a free Detroit Pistons t-shirt.
