Decompression therapy offered at Brandon Chiropractic
By Susan Bromley
Brandon Twp.- A car accident eight years ago left Lynn Klenow with debilitating back pain.
The 41-year-old postal carrier had to take a week off work not long ago because her back hurt so much she was barely able to walk. An MRI showed a bulging disc and bone spurs. But thanks to what is being called a medical breakthrough, Klenow has healed.
‘I’ve noticed a 100-percent improvement already,? she says. ‘It’s unbelievable. I’m not having any problems at all.?
Klenow now recommends anyone with back pain get decompression therapy, the treatment that provided the relief for her that physical therapy never did. The Davison resident began decompression therapy less than two months ago at Brandon Chiropractic, the only SpinalAid Center in Michigan, and one of only about five chiropractic offices with a decompression therapy table in the state.
Klenow was the second patient to try decompression therapy at Brandon Chiropractic, located at 70 S. Ortonville Road. Dr. Jay Stark says the technology has been around for 10 years, but he only recently obtained the table after recent studies showed it is ‘incredibly effective.?
Stark says 30 million people in the United States have back pain. Decompression therapy is for those with lower back pain caused by bulging or herniated discs, who have been unsuccessful in getting relief by conventional treatment methods.
According to SpinalAid Centers of America, decompression relieves pain by creating a vacuum type suction which reverses the high pressure inside the disc (high intra-disc pressure) and draws the bulging or herniated material back into the disc.
‘It has an 86 percent success rate if they have a herniated disc and an even higher success rate with bulging discs,? says Stark. ‘The success rate is phenomenal.?
Stark notes it typically takes 20 visits to heal. Each session takes about an hour, with no physical manipulation involved and no known risks, unlike surgery. The procedure is not painful, he says.
Klenow noticed improvement after three visits.
‘I don’t think I’ll have any more problems,? she said. ‘If I keep feeling like I do now, I’ll be happy. My back pain was constant before. Now, I might have a twinge, but it in no way hinders anything I do. I’m confident that when I’m done (with the treatment), that’ll be gone, too.?
Stark says some insurance companies cover the elective procedure and he believes there will be more as time goes on.
‘This is a cure, not a temporary solution in most cases,? he says. ‘It is a pleasure to be able to help someone who had no hope and thought they couldn’t work or hold their grandkids. To give them that back is great.?
