A Brandon Township couple has pleaded guilty to felonious assault charges stemming from a failed drug deal in September in the Sashabaw Meadows Mobile Home Park.
Samantha Leighann Layman, 19, pleaded guilty to one charge of felonious assault and one charge of malicious destruction of property and Brian Koop, 18, pled guilty to one charge of felonious assault on Dec. 7 in front of Sixth Circuit Court Judge Rudy Nichols.
According to police reports, Brandon deputies were dispatched to the Sashabaw Meadows Mobile Home Park in the early morning hours of Sept. 18 regarding a confrontation, but arrived to find the suspects had left. Later that day, around 9:50 p.m., the deputies were dispatched to a fight in progress at Pinoak and Birch. They arrived at the intersection of Dogwood and Pinoak, where they were flagged down by a witness. The 18-year-old victim was in front of a home in the 3700 block of Birch. The fight had taken place in front of a home in the 3600 block of Hawthorne.
In a statement, Koop admitted selling marijuana from the Hawthorne residence to the victim, his younger brother, and their friend. The friend hit Koop during the drug deal, and Koop said he hit the victim with a baseball bat after feeling his and Layman’s lives were threatened.
Layman used a tire iron to strike the victim on the back of his head, and to smash out windows on the victim’s older brother’s vehicle.
Sentencing for Layman is set for 8:30 a.m., Dec. 21. Koop will be sentenced at 8:30 a.m., Jan. 12.
