BRANDON TOWNSHIP-Since last October, members of the Brandon Township Preservation Committee of the North Oakland Headwaters Land Conservancy have been organizing plans for the River Day 2003 event.
The group asked the Brandon Township Board of Trustees at the April 7 meeting for support in supplying rest-room facilities during the event.
‘We agreed to support them, but not to exceed $200. We need to have adequate facilities for people to use during the event,? said Ron Lapp, township supervisor.
‘We have done this same type of donation for other groups in the past and we are happy to contribute to their group.?
The focus of River Day 2003 is Kearsley Creek, the shining jewel in the community. Brandon Township and the village of Ortonville have one of two designated trout streams located in Oakland County. The first week in June, members of the community will have their chance to celebrate Kearsley Creek, one of the trout streams.
‘Kearsley Creek really is a nice body of water and it needs to be preserved. This will be a nice event for the entire community,? said Lapp.
The Ortonville Village Council also showed support for Creekfest by adopting a resolution at the Feb.10 council meeting.
‘We know the importance of Creekfest and of maintaining the resources in this area,? said village manager Paul Zelenak.
Lois Robbins, coordinator for the Creekfest group said they have plans to set up a conservancy table at the upcoming Ortonville Chamber of Commerce Business Expo.
‘There’s so much to do. Currently we are having a hard time finding someone to play music. We would like to have about four or five people that can play near the creek during the event and for the parade,? said Robbins.
The group will continue to promote the event and stress its importance for the community’s involvement and has events, games, and presentations for the entire family.
