After a 4-2-1 campaign in 2006, Clarkston’s boys track team made a big step toward to the top of the OAA with a third place finish in the seven-team conference.
‘We had a lot of seniors last year,? coach Walt Wyniemko said.
‘We have a lot of young freshman and sophomores as part of this team. It’s a good, strong nucleus.?
Sophomore Jeff Kuhl and senior Nick LaMora, a one-two punch on the cross country team last fall, look for repeat status as threats in the one and two-mile runs.
‘The distance people in this league are very strong,? Wyniemko said.
‘They’re the anchor of our distance right now, they’re a key for us to be successful. They have to play key roles in the mile and two mile and also in the 4×800 yard run. Technically, it’s the first running event, so it’s a key component of competition.?
Wyniemko and assistant coaches Mike Taylor, Dave Whitehead and Kyle Powell will use Tuesday’s scrimmage as a pre-season scouting report for the Wolves.
‘That should give us a good idea of where we’re at,? Wyniemeko said.
‘We’ll try to move people into the right spots. We have close to 70 (team members) and that’s a good number for us, we just want to make sure we put everyone in the right spot.?
Junior Erik Thompson, a kick-returner and running back for Clarkston’s regional qualifying football team last fall, should further mature this season, Wyniemko said. Senior Matt Alexander should be strong in the middle distance events for the Wolves, he added.
