The Varsity Bowling teams got a dose of Dragons this past week.
On Saturday, Jan. 9 they bowled against Swartz Creek, one of the top teams in the Flint Metro League. Both teams were able to walk away with victories, but the Varsity Girls got had a more difficult time than the boys disposing the Dragons.
The girls fell behind 10-0 after losing the baker games, a situation they have never faced in the FML.
It looked like their perfect record in the FML would be no more, but the girls dug deep and Senior Co-Captain Kelly Cartner began the comeback by winning her first match in the head-to-head games. Sophomore Heather Lafnear followed suit, winning her match 205-193.
Heading into the second match, the girls found themselves trailing 12-7. Cartner got the team going again with her 193-160 victory, and Sophomore Colleen Walters used some later spare shooting to defeat her opponent 150-126.
The Wildcats completed the comeback when Lafnear scored a late come from behind 162-145 victory.
‘The heart the girls showed was incredible. It wouldn’t have been an upset loss to Creek, but their refuse to lose leadership would not let that happen,? said Head Coach JR Lafnear.
He added that the victory wouldn’t have been possible without Senior Anna Tomaka, who bowled a 193 in her loss. She bowled her highest game of the year, which helped the Wildcats win totals.
While the girls had to scratch and claw their way to victory, the boys started out strong, and by the end of the end of the first head-to-head match, they were on cruise control.
The Wildcats jumped out to a 10-0 lead after the baker games after bowling five strikes to open the first baker game and seven strikes in the first eight frames in the second baker game.
‘I was in awe of the boys as they banged out strike after strike in baker,? said JR Lafnear.
The boys had wrapped up the victory by after the first head-to-head match.
Seniors Sean LeBlanc and Mike Magyar lead the Wildcats with a 256 and 244 respectively.
Both teams moved to 4-0 on the year in the FML. They take on Fenton Jan. 16.
