After several days of boiling their water, residents along White Lake Road and Dixie Highway were released from a boil water advisory begun late last week by Independence Township DPW Director Linda Richardson.
As of deadline on Tuesday morning, those residents on Andersonville Road, east of White Lake Road, and those on Parview and Curtis Lane fronting Andersonville Road were still under the restriction.
This is the second time for a boil water advisory to be instituted since upgrades began on the township’s water system. The first was in July and primarily affected residents in Hillview Estates, located in the northeast section of the township. The cause at that time was well interference.
This time, Richardson suspects a new water line to be the problem.
According to a release from Richardson, several samples taken on Sept. 22 were clear of coliform bacteria on Dixie Highway and White Lake Road. Coliform bacteria are generally not harmful, but are used as indicators for other potentially harmful bacteria.
The initial boil water advisory began on Sept. 21 when more samples were found than allowed in the affected area. DPW workers tested for other harmful bacteria, such as E. coli, but none were found.
The Sept. 23 release from the DPW said workers will continue to flush hydrants and take samples along Andersonville Road until acceptable results are obtained for two consecutive days. The mains along White Lake Road and Dixie Highway will also be continually monitored.
While under the boil water advisory, residents should not use tap water without boiling first for at least one minute. This includes using tap water for drinking, making ice, brushing teeth, washing dishes and preparing food.
