Battle of the Books set to begin

Brandon Twp.- Ready, set, read.
The Friends of the Brandon Library are sponsoring their third annual Battle of the Books competition for all fifth and sixth grade students in the Brandon School District. Teams of three to five students can begin registering Nov. 7. There is a limit of 10 teams. An orientation will be 7 p.m., Nov. 21 in the library’s community room, 304 South St., during which team names and coaches will be chosen and rules will be discussed.
In the Battle of the Books, teams have three months to read six books chosen by the library and then answer questions about the books during a competition for points and prizes from 6:30-8 p.m., April 10 at the library. All teams receive a 2006 Battle of the Books iron-on t-shirt transfer.
This year’s books are ‘Crispin,? by Avi; ‘Knee Knock Rise,? by Natalie Babbitt; ‘Bud, Not Buddy,? by Christopher Paul Curtis; ‘Pictures of Hollis Woods,? by Patricia Reilly Giff; ‘Our Only May Amelia,? by Jennifer L. Holm; and ‘Hatchet,? by Gary Paulsen.
‘It’s a fun way to get kids to read more books and reward them for their efforts at the same time,? said Barb Fahlquist, library public relations clerk. ‘They learn teamwork and they talk about the books and things that are important in the books that might come up during questioning.?
