Congratulations to Oxford resident Pamela Barclay, 24, who won the ‘Heart and Soul? award from Central Michigan University for the third year in a row.
The 2000 Oxford High School graduate was one of 20 CMU students to receive the award presented by Michigan Campus Compact at Michigan State University’s Kellogg Center in April.
The ‘Heart and Soul? award recognizes students for their dedication to their community and contribution to public service.
Barclay, who is currently working towards her master’s degree in administration, spends her time volunteering with Big Brothers Big Sisters, the Detroit Children’s Hospital and at the volunteer center at CMU, specifically, coordinating students with Alternative Breaks for the past six years.
‘Alternative Breaks is a program where students are able to go and do service in other areas of the country and world,? she said. ‘They get to work with a social issue that they may never have seen before, like homelessness or hunger.?
Barclay also supervises several of CMU’s other volunteer programs and said she feels ‘privileged? to be among the students who received the ‘Heart and Soul? award. She thinks it’s important for those who volunteer to be recognized for their efforts.
‘Having someone recognize you publicly for the work you dedicate in your free time is nice and it provides motivation to continue doing volunteer work,? she said.
Barclay is the daughter of Lee and Maggie Barclay of Oxford.
