A pair of road wins over league competition gave Lake Orion High School its first Oakland Activities Association title in school history.
The Dragons last won a league championship in 1988, when they played in the Greater Oakland Athletics League.
At 9-2 in the OAA III, LO can still be tied by Oak Park, but the Dragons will have a say in that matter as they play at Oak Park on March 3.
The week started with a relatively easy 63-42 win at Bloomfield Hills Lasher on Feb. 21.
The Dragons got out to quick starts in both halves, winning the first quarter 19-6 and the third quarter 20-9.
Drew Maynard scored 18 points and Marc Thompson added 13 in the victory.
That win, coupled with Oak Park’s 71-49 loss at Stoney Creek, meant that a Dragon win at Farmington Hills Harrison on Feb. 24 would give the Dragons at least a share of the title.
LO beat Harrison by 35 points at home a few weeks ago, but knew the rematch would be more tightly contested.
Harrison used a 12-0 run to close out the first half up a point 31-30.
But the Dragons came out of the locker room on a mission and opened the third quarter with a 14-4 run. From there LO held off a couple of Harrison rallies and came away with a hard-fought 74-66 win.
With Maynard held below his season average with 14 points, Jon Krause, Ross Tonyan and Justin Diesbourg came to the rescue for LO. Krause scored 17, two below his career high, and Tonyan and Diesbourg had 15 a piece.
The Dragons will host district play that begins on March 6. LO plays Waterford Mott with the winner getting Oxford in the March 8 semifinals. Clarkston, Waterford Kettering and Lapeer East are on the other half of the bracket.
Play gets underway at 5:30 p.m.
