Atlas Twp. – If you’re considering running for an Atlas Township office, deadlines are looming.
All five township offices will be voted on in this November’s election: Two trustee seats, and the offices of clerk, treasurer, and supervisor. Partisan candidates will be determined in the August primary election.
Currently, all trustees receive an annual stipend of $5,091; the clerk and treasurer each receive $25,341 annually, and the supervisor receives $20,923 annually.
To run, three forms are required.
A ‘Statement of Organization? must be filed with the Genesee County Clerk’s Office, located in the Genesee County Court House at 900 S. Saginaw St. in Flint, rooms 201 and 202 on 2 East. Part of the Campaign Finance Act, the form must be filed within 20 days of letting candidacy be known, and filed prior to submitting another form, the ‘Affidavity of Identity and Receipt of Filing?.
The ‘Affidavit of Identity and Receipt of Filing? must be completed, notarized, and returned to the Atlas Township Hall, located at 7386 Gale Road in Goodrich, or to the Genesee County Clerk’s Office by 4 p.m. May 11.
A third form must also be filed. The particular form depends on whether the candidate is declaring a party affiliation.
Partisan office candidates file a ‘Nominating Petition? with three to 10 valid signatures of registered township voters. Independent candidates not declaring a party affiliation are required to file a ‘Qualifying Petition? with nine to 30 signatures of registered township voters. The deadline to file the Nominating Petition is 4 p.m. May 11. The deadline to file the Qualifying Petition is 4 p.m. July 15.
A packet containing all necessary forms is available at the Atlas Township Offices. Office hours are 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday through Thursday, and 8 a.m. to noon Friday.
