Varsity wrestling takes third in the Flint Metro League

Results of the Flint Metro League Wrestling Championships, hosted this past Saturday at Oxford High School, were not a surprise to the Wildcat grapplers.
Oxford took third place overall in team standings; third in tournament standings with 152 behind Lapeer West (213.5) and Holly (164); and third in dual standings with 4-2, again behind West (6-0) and Holly (5-1).
Lapeer West was the team to beat this year with a perfect league record. The Wildcats made a drive for second against Holly at the tournament, but were not able to pull out the win.
Taking the championship spots for Oxford were Kyle Rowley, 189, and Kyle Oliver, 215. Rowley fought hard against Lapeer East’s Mike Bashore, finally winning the match by points in the final seconds with a surprise escape. Oliver’s win was quicker with a solid pin in the second round.
Also placing for the Wildcats were Mike May, 119, in third; Matt Duncan, 125; in third; Bryant Vielhaber, 130, in third; Shawn Gall, 135, in third; Mike Potter, 152, in third; Nick Murray, 145, in third; Mike Upshur, 103, in fourth; Nathan Musgrove, 112, in fourth; and Kyle Nieporte, 160, in fourth.
The grapplers next competition is on Feb. 19 at MHSAA districts.
