Groveland Township-Detective Sgt. Gary Muir from the Michigan State Police-Groveland Team is currently investigating a sexual misconduct case involving a Groveland Township resident–Edward Miller.
Miller, 56, was arrested on Sept. 3, 2003 and the preliminary examination is set for Sept. 22, 2003 at the 52-2 District Court in Clarkston. He is charged with second degree Criminal Sexual Conduct, Fourth Degree Criminal Sexual Conduct, two counts of indecent exposure and two counts of assault and battery. He faces 15 years for the Second Degree count, two years for the Fourth Degree count, one year for indecent exposure count and 90 days for the assault and battery count.
Detective Muir received a letter from Lt. David Savage from Homer, Ga., stating the victim and her grandmother came into his office saying that her stepfather, Miller, had been sexually abusing and fondling her for the last nine years.
The girl is now 16 and said the abuse started when she was 8 or 9 in 1994 and at the time was too afraid to tell her mother in fear of not being believed, but she is now ready to tell what happened, according to Detective Muir’s report. She said her stepfather, a General Motors employee in Pontiac would drive to work in the morning to clock in and then return home. He would then ask her to return with him to clock out just before work ended and had been doing so for years. She claims the abuse took place on the rides back to the GM plant.
The victim also claimed the abuse halted for a short while when Miller was elected Committee Chairman of a United Auto Workers Local.
The girl claimed the last incident occurred on July 16, 2003 when she was leaving for Georgia to live with her grandmother.
Detective Muir told the victim she would have to come to Michigan to make an official report and to be interviewed by Muir and other authorities at the Care House in Pontiac. Upon investigation, Muir interviewed Miller and found sufficient evidence to make an arrest. Miller is the owner of the Parkway Motel on Dixie Highway.
Miller’s bond was set at $17,000. He was released upon a 10 percent payment.
