The dragon sluggers defeated both the Wolves of Clarkston and the Oxford Wildcats on June 4 to win the district title.
The wins represent the first district champions in a few years according to Head Coach Andrew Schramek, who also said it had been ‘too long? since the last title.
The first game, against Clarkston, saw the Dragons thoroughly defeat their rivals to the west with a score of 10-0. The game ended in a mercy ruling. The second, against Oxford, was a 6-4 win with the Wildcats clawing their way back up near the end of the game.
Still the surge was not enough.
Junior pitcher Nick Deeg threw one hit short of a no-hitter against Clarkston and managed a home run against Oxford. Senior Jake Gardner had four RBIs on the day while junior Nick Vogelmeier took the single season all-time record for most runs in a season at 47 times around the diamond.
‘It was a good day for Orion,? said Schramek. ‘We played hard and got our district title back.?
Next up the Dragons travel to Hartland for the regional tournament. First they will play Stoney Creek followed by a game against the winner of a Hartland versus Rochester Adams game. While he remained uncertain of the second game, Schramek said games against Stoney Creek this season have been good games, but Orion has come out on top every time.
