For the past 38 years, residents of Oxford and northeast Oakland have gone to one place to get their horse supplies.
Founded in 1973 by Sue Gabriel, The Covered Wagon Saddlery, located 20 S. Washington St in downtown Oxford, has been the go-to place for everything one would need to saddle up their horse and hit the trail.
‘We cater to the horse people all over Michigan, to the people who like to wear boots, wear western hats, the moccasin people,? Gabriel said. ‘We have everything for the horse and rider from summer to winter wear.?
Gabriel said they have grown a lot during their 38 years in Oxford.
‘Being on M-24, there are so many cars that come by here. People going to concerts, they come by here and buy a hat, boots because they want to look like a cowboy,? she said. ‘Oakland County is such a horse area and we are on a main road and people who work in Detroit go by us everyday.?
‘We keep everything stocked, we have great inventory. We are open everyday, and Sundays, too,? she said.
At Covered Wagon Saddlery, Gabriel carries a full line of mens and womens Western and English style clothing. They offer beautiful show clothes for the competitive rider, casual wear for the casual rider or clothes that will show off one’s western or English style.
Gabriel said she offers the best in boots, including top manufactures Ariat, Justin, Laredo, Dingo, Smoky Mountian and Dan Post for those looking for the western look, and both short and tall English riding boots.
‘Our boot sizes run from infants all the way up to size 16 in men sizes,? she said.
She also offers a nice selection of English and western riding apparel, jewelry, bling belts, equipment and accessories for men, women and children.
The Covered Wagon offers a full line of children’s show and work clothing and riding boots.
When it comes to taking care of horses, Gabriel offers winter blankets, waterproof sheets, saddles and heavyweights and midweights for miniature horses up to draft horses.
‘Everything we sell is cheaper than buying it online, and we saved you the freight and you can exchange everything,? she said.
Their selection can also be viewed at www.thecoveredwagonsaddlery.com.
According to Gabriel, the latest hot seller are moccasins.
‘People were asking about moccasins. Kids wear them to school, the teenagers, and the movie stars wear them,? she said. ‘You used to have to go up north to get moccasins, but now you can get them right in Oxford. We have the tall ones, the short ones. (They are) insulated and they are all Minnetoka.?
Starting this week, customers can expect a big sale in honor of the store’s 38th anniversary. The sale runs until Sunday, Nov. 13.
The Covered Wagon is open Monday through Friday from 10:00 a.m. to 6 p.m., Saturdays from 10:00 a.m. to 5 p.m. and Sundays from Noon to 4 p.m.
