GROVELAND TOWNSHIP-For the past several years, the Michigan State Police Groveland Township Post has had the honor of working with Trooper Trevor Radke. However, his involvement with the post will have to be put on hold.
Radke has been in law enforcement for 13 years and has been an active Marine Reservist for the last five. He received orders shortly after midnight Sunday, Feb.23 for full activation.
In honor of his absence and dedication, a small potluck dinner took place at the post. Personnel from the Groveland Fire Department, Holly Police Department and other friends gathered to send him off.
Among the crowd, the most important faces were his wife and five children, ages ranging from four to 16.
Radke is a member of the Company C, 1st Battalion of the 24th Marine Division, based in Lansing. After spending a few days there, his destination overseas is unknown.
Lt. Doug Lubahn, post commander, has stressed to Radke’s family they will be in touch frequently.
“We are going to help them in any possible way we can,” Lubahn said. “Although we are sad to see him go, we’re proud that he’s giving his service and we await his return.”
Lubahn said the food and friendship was plentiful, while the mood ranged from somber to festive to patriotic.
In an July 8 People Poll, Radke responded to The Citizen’s question: “What does the American flag symbolize to you?” His answer is the very heart of his mission now.
Radke said, “Our colors, as we call them in the Marines, means everything. The principles of the flag are what’s worth dying for, not the country. It’s the principles that make us free.”
