The week off for Spring Break did not affect the Varsity Golf team as they defeated Cilo and posted a top-ten finish at a tournament at Lapeer East Country Club this past week.
The week started with a 168-173 victory over Cilo. Liam Gullivan lead the Wildcat’s with a 38, while Brandon Schinn contributed a 40 to help secure the victory.
The Wildcats took that momentum and used it to propel themselves to an eighth place finish in a 24 team, 18 hole tournament on Friday, April 17. Schinn lead the way for the Wildcat’s with a 77, which was placed him fifth overall.
Coach Kelley is pleased with the way his guys are playing.
‘The boys are playing well,? Coach Kelley said. ‘To finish in the top thirty percent in a tournament is pretty good? he said.
Coach Kelley said that a couple of the Flint Metro League teams finished only a couple of shots ahead of them in the final standings, so he was looking forward to facing them as the season progressed.
One thing he is still looking for is consistency from the practice rounds to the competitive rounds.
‘We just need to keep improving. Our top three guys are playing well, but we need guys to step up when our top two or three have an off day? said Kelley.
In order to keep the level of competition up in practice, Coach Kelley has the boys participate in playoffs during the practice rounds to try and get them to shoot consistently while under pressure.
Their next matches are against Flint Carmen-Answorth and Lapeer West on Tuesday and Wednesday this week.
