On Saturday, Jan 24, the Oxford Wildcat Varsity Cheer team won its first match of the year, defeating Hazel Park and Lasher.
The girls finished with their highest point total of the season, 639.3526, nearly 15 points ahead of second place Hazel Park.
‘It was very exciting for our team to achieve a first-place finish and gives us more confidence and motivation going into this week’s Flint Metro League meet,? said Oxford Cheer Coach Sheri Russell.
‘In addition to taking first we achieved our best scores in Round 1 and Round 2 for the season,? she added.
For the past week, the girls have been working on a new cheer routine for their third round of competition, and they pulled it off on Saturday, but not without a few glitches.
‘Last week we made many changes to our Round 3 to make it more difficult and appealing to the fans’This was the first time we competed with the new routine,? Russell said. ‘We had some small problems with the new routine, but are excited to clean it up so all three rounds can be even stronger on Wednesday.?
She added: ‘The team comes back after every competition and focuses on improving their weaknesses. ‘I could not be happier as a coach.?
