With a 27-7 homecoming victory on Friday over Swartz Creek, the Oxford Wildcats completed one of the team’s goals for the year.
The victory gave the Cats six wins on the season and guaranteed a state playoff berth.
This Friday the Cats travel to Linden to go after a second team goal ? securing a Flint Metro League title.
Linden is 7-0 in league play while Oxford is 6-1. Both Oxford and Linden would have one game remaining after this Friday’s game. Oxford will play Holly to close out the season.
It is a must win for Oxford for the team to get at least a share of the Flint Metro League title.
The Wildcats are in second place with Fenton. Both teams are 6-1.
The Wildcats had little difficulty with Swartz Creek during homecomin last week. The Dragons have not won a game this season.
Quarterback Nick Tombrella and tailback Austyn Sylva led the Wildcats.
Tombrella rushed 21 times for 116 yards and Sylva had 22 carries for 114 yards.
Sylva had the first two TDs for the Wildcats in the first half on runs of 10 and 5 yards.
Tombrella threw a a 5-yard TD pass to Evan Sanderson in the third quarter and Sylva had a five yard TD run in the fourth quarter. Matt Versteeg kicked three PATs.
Swartz Creek got their only score of the night in the fourth quarter on a 20-yard TD run.
Coach Bud Rowley said following the game that he wanted the team to enjoy the homecoming and not worry about Linden.
‘Everyone got to play and it was a good win for us,? Rowley said.
