Last year, Orion Township spent $100,000 improving some gravel roads.
They purchased the 21AA limestone and the Road Commission of Oakland County applied it.
Last week, the board approved the concept for this spring. The funding will come from the township’s capital improvement fund. No dollar amount was set, as the township engineers will first identify which roads need the most help.
‘I think it’s a great benefit to the community,? Trustee John Garlicki said. ?(Last year) some of the gravel was misapplied to roads that weren’t on the list, so we need to make sure we call out those roads this year.?
The issue will come back to the board at their April 21 meeting and board members are hoping that some residents who benefited from the purchase of the gravel last year will provide an update on how the project has worked.
Their motion to approve the concept came after a presentation by the Road Commission, which wasn’t specifically related to gravel roads, but did get one point across.
‘It is apparent that the Road Commission does not have the funds to purchase gravel,? Treasurer Alice Young said.
Orion Township was one of three governmental entities in the county to purchase gravel last year and one of only nine to do so dating back to 2000.
