The next time you purchase something from eBay, you just may be helping to donate money to the Oxford High School band programs.
When customers bring their sale items to the iSold It on eBay store and the item doesn’t sell or doesn’t appraise for at least $40, owner Karen Burkeen gets stuck with them.
‘We’re running out of space,? she said about the business she runs at 975 S. Lapeer Rd. ‘We’ve found stuff in here from when we first opened a year ago.?
If a customer doesn’t claim the item within a month, Burkeen will list the item on eBay again at a really low starting bid to try and generate some sort of cash from the item. That cash will eventually be put into a check form and sent to OHS’s band programs.
‘It’s just a shame and wasteful to take it to the dumpster,? she said. ‘Somebody could use it.?
Items like Franklin Mint collectable coins, old computer equipment and accessories and even some instruments will be put up for bid.
Burkeen and her husband, John, who is also co-owner of the store, decided the proceeds should go to the schools, since they’re typically the first ones on the chopping block during budget cuts.
Jim Gibbons, band director at OHS, said the money received from the sold items will be used to purchase supplies and equipment for the bands, like color guard warm-ups, new flags and possibly percussion equipment.
‘We want to try and do this once a year,? Burkeen said.
