Start 2008 on the right foot

Forget the good intentions; put your healthy New Year’s resolution into action by participating in the annual Downtown Lake Orion ‘New Year’s Resolution Run.?
Beginning at 10 a.m. on Tuesday, Jan. 1, the race offers two options: a 5K for the serious runners, and a 1-mile fun run for the rest of us. The race routes circle throughout the historical downtown district.
More than 250 runners participated last year, and this year’s event could draw an even larger crowd.
In addition to world-class runners and members of local high school cross-country teams in the 5K race (some even wearing kilts ? see picture), the 1-mile event attracts competitors in the 12-and-under age category, plus joggers and walkers of all ages, including some with their dogs and baby carriages.
‘It’s all about participation and starting the year out right,? said Ron Kalso, Downtown Development Authority Promotions Committee chairperson.
Medals will be awarded to the top three male and female finishers in each of the following categories: Open, Senior (40+) and 12 & under. The winner in each group will receive a $25 gift certificate from Hanson’s Running Shop.
The runner with the best overall time in the 5K will also receive a $100 gift certificate from the DDA, good at 26 participating downtown stores and restaurants.
Participation ribbons will be provided to everyone in the 12 & under category.
The New Year’s Resolution Run is made possible through the generous sponsorship of local businesses, including: Hanson’s Running Shop, Tool Sport & Sign, Lucky’s Natural Foods, The Lake Orion Review, Turner Sanitation, CJ’s Lakeside Grill and Village Trophy Shop.
Registration forms are available on-line at downtownlakeorion.org, under ‘events,? or at Hanson’s Running Shops, Lucky’s Natural Foods, Paint Creek Bicycles and the DDA office at 51 N. Broadway.
Entry fees are $15 for pre-registered 5K runners and $12 for pre-registered 1-milers and kids under 12. Newly designed t-shirt guaranteed for all runners pre-registered by Dec. 21.
Race Day registration at 51 N. Broadway begins at 9 a.m. and is $20 for everyone who has not pre-registered. Shirts will be provided while quantities last.
