Kids learn about overseas service by serving others

The instructor barked orders at the assembled troops, many of whom immediately started giggling.
They didn’t get in trouble. They were preschool-second grade children learning about the service of troops overseas.
‘We want the kids to realize we are actually in a war ? they don’t see it,? said Sandy Squiers, coordinator of Servathon 2007 at Clarkston Community Church of God. ‘We want them to know there are troops serving them, for their freedom. This is a way for them to give back in some, small way.?
As part of Operation Care Package and Servathon 2007, the children were organized into groups named after military branches, and marched around to stations throughout the church complex. They made decorative stockings, ornaments, cards, pictures, and prayers for troops serving overseas.
They were among 600 preK-12th grade students at Oakland Christian School, which covers three counties, raising money and completing projects for local schools, service groups, and food banks.
